Keep that Calypso beat, while you stomp you feet to two great Harry Belafonte songs from his Calypso album of 1956. I have to admit I went to see him in concert, in San Francisco, when this album came out. ( I am soooooo old).

Keeping our "Get Back to Basics" theme, both of our songs are using a simple 3 chord progression of I, IV and V. What's doing with doz Roman numbers you ask.... I'll tell you this coming 3rd Sunday the 19th.

January 2012... We go walkn' With some back to basics.

Yup! Back to basics for the New Year.

We now have in our musical collection of the past two years, oddles of songs that are more intermediate to advanced intermediate level, and fewer songs of the basic 2 or 3 chord variety. Which I am finding that if I am to teach beginners and to have them leave not confused or frustrated, then we need to get more focused on and back to these basic learning steps.

That's not to say... we won't have a few brain teasers. But more along the way of mini-workshops (mainly handouts) of chord studies or progressions, Relative tuning, Transposing, etc.

So let's get started. Our first song of this new year is "These Boots are Made for Walking". It's 3 basics chords in A-- A, C and D.

I'll have a combined book of all the songs we did in 2011 posted to our Wiki website in the next few days. So check on back.

December Songs - just in time for the Holidays

It's that time again. When the cold brings us inside... then the shopping pushes us outside back into the cold cold cold... then for some odd reason, afterwards, when we're back home or with friends, we all feel like singing and playing our ukuleles.

To help you along with song... we have the return of some of our more traditional, in our Holiday Song book, a multi-page (8 pages) download.

We're also bringing back last years favorite - 'The Chanukah Song' by Adam Sandler.

It's November and Happy Turkey Day.

For this month I finally was able to dig up two Thanksgiving songs.... it was hard... really! If anyone knows of any others please let me know for next year.

We have an old traditional Thanksgiving song -- Over the River (yes, it's a Thanksgiving song not a christmas song)

And a new song - The Gobble Song. You have to watch the YouTube link to watch all the fun it can be.

WikiWiki Jam on Alki Beach taking a hiatus

With the cold weather closing in on us the WikiWiki on Alki is going to hibernate... taking a hiatus... getting out of the cold... Zip... Kapow.... I'm outta here!

But just for the winter months. See you next summer for sure. For now I've left you with the perfect song, from another time, that says it all.

October.. Sing 'On Moonlight Bay' when you look out onto Elliott Bay....

It's an oldie, and short and sweet and simple to play.

Remember Gordon McRay and Doris Day... they sung it and made a movie of the same name. For those of you that don't know those names of movie history... even the Beatles sang it. For those of you that don't know the Beatles... well, just come talk to me.

'On Moonlight Bay' is our song for October. I even included a simple song sheet if you want to try picking the melody. Now you can sing the verse, pick the medley, and sing the verse again.... just like Doris and Gordon.

Of the 4 chords in this song the F, Bb, and C are all very simple... but then comes that F dim..... 'dim' for diminished, like in diminished hopes of every grabbing it properly. But the good part is that once you can grab one diminished chord... it's good for most of all the other diminished chords.

WikiWiki Jam on Alki

Last Sunday was our last 'on the beach' in the 'outdoors' WikiWiki... luckily it was a beautiful day at the beach. I am still trying to find a nice place on Alki that's 'indoors' maybe with a bathroom and some warm drinks.

One never knows what's going to happen when you name a date and say 'let's get together and play some ukulele'. But I learned one can claim success when you have a bunch of supportive friends and a few crazy ones to add to the pile. Between 7 or 8, maybe 9 ukers showed up, I don't know the real numbers... as one left, two others would show up.

With out a doubt two of the more crazy were Tyler (inset) and Rob who pulled up to Anchor Park (Alki Beach) in their Zodiac, all the way from Shilshole Marina to join us. Sad for them they showed up right as we were ending up at 3pm.... but lucky for me they still wanted to play... I had to stay. They were late because one of them, I won't say who, left the launching wheels down... what a drag. lol

Thank you all for showing up... thanks Gregg for a great Bass uke to follow and for your unexpected singing.... which reminds me that I need singing lessons and soon.

Mahalo to you all.

NOTE: The next West Seattle Beach Jam is scheduled the same day as the SUPA picnic at Woodland Park, August 7th . I hate to take this away from Alki, as we just started and we have only so few summer months/weekends). But....

....we will join our ukulele family and enjoy the bigger event. I encourage all my WikiWiki players to come to Woodland Park and join in the good food and ukelele sounds August 7th.

July is full of 'Moonglow'

Now that the fireworks are over... there's plenty of time to look up into our dark nights, with someone you love while you grab your trusty ukulele and sing about the 'Moonglow'.

This is an ol' Billie Holliday number and if you want to jazz it up listen to her on YouTube. But I slowed it down and let Mr. Rod Stewart sing it for you. I think it's best slow and moody.

The cord names may be a bit daunting with all the D13ths, G6's or flated 9's. But they really are forms of shapes most of you have played before. Get that awesome riff down and you won't want to stop.

What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas.... and that's good for us. I am very vocal about not being an Elvis fan, but I have to admit I do like a few of his songs and 'Viva Las Vegas' is at the top of my El-vi list. Why?... 'cause it's so much fun to sing.

OK... some of you are wondering... 'Why Pat is the June song so early?' I am going on vacation yeah!!!!. I'll be back on the 15th for any questions you may have.... otherwise I'll see you all on the 19th at the WikiWiki.

Update: I plan to have a ukulele gathering on the beach... on Alki. This will be our West Seattle 1st sunday Jam. Our fist beach jam will be July 3rd. I'll have more details, as to where and when, by the next WikiWiki.

Hank Williams is one of those greats. Great sound, great songs, and what's great for us most of Hank's songs are easy to play.

So get that voice in the back of your throat, let it vibrate to a western 'twang' and let's all sing and play... 'Hey, Hey Good Lookin'.

We all love brother IZ's medley - "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/It's a Wonderful World". It's a tough song to master and is best played as a solo with a bit of the Reggae or Calypso beat.

I keep getting requests... so for you brave souls here's some home work.

Here's the strum sheet -- see Calypso. Get the strum down then practice the chord progression just below it... 2 measures of 4 beats of each ---- C -- Em, F -- C, F -- E7, Am -- F .

"Sea of Love"... is one of the great songs of early rock and roll. We're back to simple chords and a slow steady beat on this one. How many remember strolling down the dance floor to this one?.

OK... am I the only one that old?

I'm starting something new as well... I call it XtraCredit.

Our first XtraCredit song is a jumpin' be-bop song called "Bring Me Sunshine", which starts out slow and easy... and if you're brave enough you can work it to a high pitch of excitement. Just watch the very hot video here.

March Songs.... late, late, late....

Yup! I made it, but just barely.

We have a jumping little Ja-wiian song for us this time. "Lahaina" from Loggins and Messina - remember them?. And an old favorite "Stand By Me" from Ben E. King.

Both of these songs have almost the same beat or strum... with a little twist to 'em. So they should be fun.

And, yes..... for our Irish friends (which I am one)... we will sing "When Irish Eyes are Smilin" from the 2010 combined book.

You know those pretty silver Korg tuners...

I am talking about the Korg N222. A lot of us bought one... even though they were expensive (like $75)... and they did kinda make us look like we played better than we really did. Even Jake had one.... and he does play good.

Well, they don't sell them anymore, and you can't find parts for them either.... even that little cap that protects and covers over the battery... so it won't fall out. Well, I so despertly need one of those caps. Sooooooo.

I am looking for someone that has a broken Korg tuner N222 (the model number is on the back). Broken but not tossed, because it cost $75 new, one sitting in a drawer someplace collecting dust. I'll pay $10 for that little battery cap. Really I will. That's like 2 1/2 gallons of gas.

Only as a last resort.... will I use Duck tape to fasten down the battery.

Just email me... and it's a done deal.

Yup! I was so thrilled to have the February songs ready.... then realized they have nothing to do with hearts or valentines... except they are about Doggies and Kitties. Ahhhhhh. OK, I did find the perfect love song to add to these two.

This month is a WikiWiki format re-do of a couple of fun songs the Canote brothers brought to SUPA a few months back.

Little Grass Shack - January 2011's song

Ohhh so late, but January's song is up.

We have a new Hawaiian song for January... and possibly a Hula dancer to dance while we play. How cool is that?

I have been busy.... I took all the Vamp sheets we have used in the past, updated them and added a few of the 'flash cards', and combined them together to make a new book - Beginning Vamp Chords.

I also combined all the Monthly songs of 2011 and added a few of the tools (like the nifty transposing wheel), into another book - 2010 Combined Song Book.

Oh yeah, the Hawaiian song is 'My Little Grass Shack' . I think the Hula dancer is going to be fun.

One sad note... until further notice we will no longer have a WikiWiki Jam in West Seattle. I am looking for a new place... hopefully for less rental or ideally 'none'.

Green Lake Pathway of Lights

We received the information from Seattle Parks Dept., and SUPA will be

performing across from the Community Center (where we have been every year) from

6:30-6:55pm on Saturday, December 11. Please check the SUPA home page

(http://www.seattleukulele.org) for more details as well as a link to the SUPA

2008 Holiday Songbook, which we will use for the performance. We will post the

specific song list to the Yahoo Groups this coming Wednesday after we meet to

discuss the songs, do some timing, etc. for the performance.

Remember to wear very warm clothes. Being right on the lake drops the

temperature by at least 10 degrees. SUPA will bring pocket warmers to help out.

Also, we will not have a bass player that night (all our known bass players have

prior commitments), so we'll need everybody's help in "staying together" on the

songs!

Nov/Dec Holiday Song books

For November I have stolen from my dear friends 3 great songs for Halloween - The 'Addams Family Theme', 'Purple People Eater' and that goulish love song... 'Spooky'. Look for 'HalloweenWiki-wooHoo'. Can you think of others for next year?

And December we'll sing a whole bunch of Christmas Holiday songs, ripped from the cold frozen hands of seven SUPA members.

Note: The Holiday Song book I posted was full of errors. I have posted a new book of 10 songs, called "Wiki-Supa 10 Christmas Songs". I will have copies at the next WikiWiki.

Good News..

It's time for the new songs. For October we have two fun songs --

'Hidden In The Sand' -

A Tally hall song I fell in love with when I heard Molly Lewis (aka Sweetafton23) of YouTube fame sing it in her special way. This song is only 4 very easy barre chords. You'll love it, it's so easy. And we'll play it along with Molly as she sings it for us.

'Sweet Someone' -

This is our hapa haole song for the month... I call this the ultimate sweet love song. I found a vid of Bill Tapia doing a solo so we can all join in.

Now for the Better News...

The UketoberFest is just around the corner. October 15-16 in Eugene Oregon.

Is it worth the drive, the sleeping in a strange bed, the jamming all night till way past mid-night and then getting up the next day for an 8 am workshop... by James Hill, or Del Rey, or Gerald Ross, or Craig Chee or several others? You bet your Kamaka it is, believe me this is one of the best Ukefests on this coast.

Any level player can find something of interest here. I encourage you to join me at the UketoberFest in Eugene... and yes I will be driving back Saturday night or Sunday morning to be at my WikiWiki @ Ballard Sunday. I may be tired, but I will be there.

Just to let you know I will have a few copies of the 'SUPA Song Book 2010' available for sale at the Wiki jam in West Seattle this Sunday the 6th.

It can also be purchased at the Ave Copy Center, 4141 University Way NE... 206 633-1837.

Just call them and they can set the book up anyway you like. I ordered my books to be printed double-sided, and spiral bound.. to be consistent with SUPA get the lime-green cover. Price $12.50.

Dusty Strings 2010 Uke Fest - June 25th - 27th

If you haven't experienced a Uke Fest.. you are missing loads of fun. Here's your chance to spend the whole weekend immersed in ukulele. When: June 25th - 27th.

Ralph Shaw from BC... is not only fun to watch... but his strumming techniques says for the intermediate.. but I think what I showed you back in May... this will just add to that.

Other great locals are Casey McGill.... he is the master of the swing era. Jere Canote.... more strums from a folk song angle. Matt Dahlberg... is another local guy... with some fine techniques to share.

For imported talent you can't beat James Hill.... I believe one of the best ukulele players, dare I say in the world... but he's still able to take a subject and bring it down to all levels. He's a master... and all say 'one of the best teachers to learn from'.

Also, Kimo Hussy is the Hawaiian connection... a soft speaking man of immense talent... and the ability to convey what he knows in a clear manner. A master of easy chord progressions.

June Wiki - two new songs for two Wiki's

If you haven't heard the WikiWiki has expanded. Not only do we have our ongoing and popular Ballard WikiWiki for beginners --- the third (3rd) Sunday of each month. We just this month added a WikiWiki in West Seattle on the first (1st) Sunday --- for all levels of player, even the beginner,

That's right... the 'first' Sunday in West Seattle... that's next Sunday the 6th. Don't miss it.

As a beginner, you might feel intimidated... well don't be. Our main book will be the WikiWiki song book you already have, we'll also play from the SUPA 2010 book.... so come on out to West Seattle and join in on the fun. If nothing else you play air ukulele or mute the strings and play rhythm.

As most of you know SUPA will be leaving West Seattle for Ballard and Phinny. To keep the sound of ukuleles and Aloha spirit in West Seattle... I have decided to expand or little WikiWiki group to add a second song circle in West Seattle for eager beginners and the more advanced player.

The West Seattle Song Circle will gather starting the first (1st) Sunday of July -- July 6th and continue on the first Sunday of the month thereafter. The West Seattle Song Circle will be open to all level of players.

The Beginner's Song Circle in Ballard will still continue to gather the third (3rd) Sunday of each month, our next song circle will be Sunday May 16th.

With SUPA leaving West Seattle without a songcircle, our Ukulele WikiWiki is stepping in.

Starting in June we will be hosting a songcircle, open to all levels of players, the first Sunday of every month. (more info to follow as we iron out the wrinkles)

If you know a few chords, can learn fast, love to learn more, then this will be perfect for you. Not quite a beginner still... maybe intermediate to advanced player, again... come on down.

The Beginner's Ukulele WikiWiki @ Ballard is still every third Sunday... where? At Ballard of course... same time, same place.

I am now in the process of setting up a new blog site for both WikiWiki ventures... so stay tuned for an address change.

Make your own Transposing Wheel

There comes a time when we all say.. 'Wow.. I can't sing that song, can someone change the key?' Well, now YOU can. Yes folks, you can change that song that's in C... to F or versa-vicey. Even vice-versa.

Download this handy tool, put it together. Then go to the March songs... and practice transposing 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' to G. Page two has all the instructions.

March WikWiki -- After thoughts

I was pleasantly surprised to see that our little group almost doubled in size... with a third made up of first time ukulele players. I hope we can grow and grow.... it would be nice to extend our time in the future.

I talked to a few of you afterwards and with my own observations of this last Sunday, I think I am going to make some changes for the better. If you wish to add a comment to this post, please do. I look forward to hearing your input, if it can make improvements for the better.

Observation #1:

In the Beginners workshop I find myself running the class very fast in order to get in all the information in the 45 minutes to hour alloted. I feel it has become too fast, and this pace follows through to the song circle. I believe I am leaving some of you, the very beginner, behind and possible confused. The class was created for the very beginner, so that is not a good thing.

My Fix: I will teach only one of the vamps per workshop... the vamp that leads us into our first song. The other vamp and its chords will be covered as we get into the song circle. A good solution would be to do the 'F' vamp one month and the 'C' vamp the next month.. when I can find a suitable song.

Observation #2:

Again another time constraint, with the song circle. I found this past circle, the three songs were almost too many. By the time we finished with them, still in that rush, there was little time to do selections in the song book. The simpler songs for the beginners were left out... not good. And we broke up very late.... which impacted the pot-luck group that followed us. (hope the food was still warm)

My Fix: We don't need a whole bunch of new songs each month, we need to sing the songs we have. Instead of 3 new songs each month, I will only bring two.. one easy... one intermediate with something new to it, that can be a learning tool.

Observation #3:

I am way too hyper... which makes me move the class fast. I think I need a 'Hyper monitor', someone to yell out 'Slow down'. LOL I get so excited.

My Fix: Someone with a club... or the promise that I will try to slow it down.

Observation #4:

Am I getting to those that need help? Of the people new to the ukulele and forming chords, am I getting you the help you need? I know when I ask, most of you tell me to go on.. continue. I find I take your advice and go on with the flow of the group... but then I know I have left you frustrated and possible confused... not good.

My Fix: Again my slowing everything down will help. I would love to feel that at the end of the song circle/workshop... no one is frustrated or confused. They know what they have to work on and are encouraged to do so. I would also ask that the more experienced players look over to your neighbor and give them a hand.

I hope there's not anymore... but, if you have a comment, please let me know.

The first 45 minutes or hour is 'Beginning Ukulele' for all that are totally new. Following this is our song circle, still beginning... maybe pushing the intermediate level, but I try to make it easy and enjoyable for all.

So, come on down... grab a chair... tune up... and feel the Aloha.

3 new March songs

Three new songs for us to help bring in March. A little bit of Stephen Foster with 'Camptown Races' and to help liven up the Irish, 'When Irish Eyes are Smiling'. And we'll round it off with an old favorite 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'.

OK, for those of you that say that the 'Twinkle' song is a baby song.... well, we'll play it in three keys... and one of them you will have to transpose yourself. Don't worry I'll give you the tools and show you how. You'll be a pro when we're done.

Please download this months three songs, add them to your song book, and bring yourself to the next WikiWiki on March 21st. at 1:30.

Finally... it's done. I tried to pick out some songs new to most of us. Most of them easy, some a bit harder. But, none so hard they're impossible. After a fun day at the WikiWiki, add some help from your friends and a bit more practice... no problemo.

I know this is counter productive to a big showing of uke beginners at my first 'Ukulele WikiWiki @ Ballard', but this event almost made me think of locking the doors and skipping class myself.

Song Books coming...

I am working feverishly day and night... well, not too many nights... working up new "Beginning Intro" and "Song Circle" song books. All hopefully within the beginner to intermediate range. So check back in the next few days.

What my plan is, is once the song books are posted I want everyone to print them out, put them in their own binder and bring them to each Wiki. Each month I will be adding songs for you to collect and add to your binder for the next coming Wiki. You will not need any of the SUPA song books.

Beginners, the doors open at Ballard at 1:15... please be early if possible. We need to tune up and start quickly as we only have 45 minutes then we'll move on to the Song Circle part of our two hours.

The full two hours is open to everyone... no matter what your skill level of playing. Strummers or pickers alike. Those more skilled are always a big assist to myself and the others, as well as help fill the room with that wonderful Aloha sound.

Join Pat Klopich at the Ballard Northwest Senior Center (Map), the 3rd Sunday of each month, for the Ukulele WikiWiki beginners' workshop and song circle, from 1:30p to 3:30p.

Recommended for beginning players or ukulele dreamers - all ages and abilities welcome.

Doors open at 1:15p. The first 45 min will be Beginning Tricks and Tips (first timers come early), with song circle to follow.

If you don't have a ukulele, Pat will have loaners for the day. All this for an affordable $5.
